Nepean Nomads Annual General Meeting and Dinner

Dear Member(s):

Once again it’s time for our annual dinner meeting, which will be held at St Monica’s Church, 2030 Merivale Rd., Nepean, on Thursday 15 May 2014.

The format will be the same as in previous years. We will meet in the Parish Hall of the Church at 6:15 PM with dinner being served at 7:00 PM. The dinner will be catered by Franz Gierer Catering and will be served buffet style. Dress for the evening is "casual" i.e. no suits or ties required by the men. If you have special food requirements due to allergies please contact me for special arrangements.

What will it cost you? If you’re a paid up member your cost is $21 with the club subsidizing the remainder. Paid up members may bring a non-member guest for $23. We have ordered food for sixty people but we can accommodate more.

Our annual meeting will follow the dinner and in keeping with the past I promise to keep it short and to the point. The club’s activities will reflect the amount of involvement of the membership so please take an active part in the discussions. Please give some thought about where we should go on our annual bus trip.

Please circle 15 May 2014 on your calendar now. We would like to get your answer by noon 12 May and I ask that you send your reply to Angela as soon as possible and of course, with your cheque.

As usual we will have a draw for a pile of lottery tickets as well as several other donated items. For $21 where else would you be able to get a full meal and the chance to become a millionaire?

More information can be found on the attached document

Regards,

John Desborough

Club Calendars

There are 9 calendars left. If you would like one please contact Gord Bell (613) 825-7180. This year unfortunately we have to pay for them so they cost $10.00

New year

All the best to you as we begin 2014.

Our walking season began with 14 hearty souls taking part in the first walk of the year on January First, despite the cold day. Our next event walk will be Winterlude on the First of February.

For many the new year brings a spate of resolutions. Hopefully one of yours for 2014 is to walk more. Walking may also help you improve your heart health and that other perennial resolution to drop a few pounds.

Although all of the statistics are not complete it looks like our event walk numbers were stable, but the participation in YRE’s over the year will be down.

Because of that drop we have closed several walks and made changes to several others, shortening the time of some and eliminating others. Changes have occurred to Richmond, Kanata, Stittsville and Hazeldean. Please check before heading out. At present the South Keys walk is temporarily closed. This is due to safety concern in the area. Hopefully the situation will change and it will re-open soon.

Although there are plenty of volunteers for the desk the number of volunteers to set up trails is small. The position of Trail Master ought to be that of a co-ordinator. The club sponsors some 20 event walks and has 10 YRE’s, some of which require 4 trails a year (5 and 10, winter and summer). This is too many trails for one person to be responsible for. At present we will be ‘recycling’ trails unless a few more people come forward to assist.

There is lots of help available if someone wants to try their hand at setting a trail.

Also please check the National Capital Walking Schedule for group walks.

All the best for 2014 and I hope to see you on the trails soon.

Fall news

As the number of Nomads event walk winds down I would like to say a very big thank you to all of the volunteers who have made the walking schedule so successful. We have just a few events left on our calendar of events and I hope you will be able to join us on them.

Also now that September has arrived the Tuesday morning walks have resumed. The schedule for both the event and YRE walks are elsewhere on the website.

Planning is well underway for the 2014 walking schedule. To assist with the walks we are looking for a few more people who would like to step forward to do trail planning. We are hoping to have a session on trail planning and planning tools and their use. If you've ever walked a trail and thought 'I'd like to do this,' here is your chance. Please send me a message and we'll begin setting a date.

Also I'd like to take a few lines to mention some of the special programs run by the CVF. In about a month we will be resuming the Winter Walking Program. The program begins mid-October and runs until the end of March. All CVF walks, except the RLDW, done between those dates can be recorded. From personal experience this has been the incentive I have needed to get out and walk during the winter.

Two other new programs are also in effect. The first is the TransCanada Trail. You may have noticed that many of the 2013 trails were part of this program. Another program on Murals began on July 1st. Any walk sanctioned by the IVV can be counted in this program. Ottawa has many murals, not just those in Vanier. Both of these programs will continue into 2017. Another new program on Community will begin in January. For more information and how to register for these and the other specials programs visit the CVF website at walks.ca.

Bus Trip - Scenic Albany New York

September 24-26, 2010

Well walkers I am sure you have been patiently waiting for this news!!! I realize it has taken a bit of time but as you know, I always like to look around and get the “best pricing” and the “nicest area” for you to get your sun burn in. I have been in touch with the club in Albany and they have recommended the walks which I have put in to the programme and apparently they are beautiful. Also, the prices believe it or not, are better than last year. So cost wise, this is what your trip is going to look like.

SINGLE - 1 per - $180.00

DOUBLE - 2 per room - $124.00 each == TOTAL $248.00

TRIPLE - 3 per room - $104.00 each == TOTAL $312.00

QUAD - 4 per room - $93.00 each == TOTAL $372.00

These prices are all inclusive for 2 nights in the hotel, additional cost for the bus after the donation by our club, tip for our driver and those extra goodies purchased by B.B.

Please take note: I can only hold these rooms until 20 august therefore, I must have your cheques no later than 13 august which will give me time to make up the room list and forward it along with payment for the required rooms to the hotel. (the sooner the better) Please make your cheque payable to “nepean nomads walking club” and forward it to:

20th Anniversary Volksmarch - Thank you

WOW what a weekend! The club celebrated its anniversary in great style and with lots of friends old and new. First I would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL the people that helped in putting together these events and to those who worked the walk on Saturday. It takes a lot of work and coordination to pull these events off and as usual the Nomads did and it was a success. I did not hear any complaints from walkers, but I am sure other members working the event may have, so we will take those criticism in stride.

The weekend started with a lovely meet and greet where we had the rare opportunity to have all the club presidents in the same room! Also we had a brand new walker there, as well as a young one returning to walking. There were lost friends and great conversations as we looked at the pictures of the past 20 years.

On Saturday the weather was a lot cooler than the original walk, but for the most part the rain held off and we had a good turnout. On top of that we were honoured to have Mary Pitt there, not only a former member of the Nepean City councillors but also a former member of the club. Rick Chiarelli’s words were true to what our club represents and we appreciate them taking their time to help us celebrate.

The walk was a success from two aspects we have about 90 walkers out, and on top of that we got 11 new members signed up! So I take my hat off to the following people who worked hard to make this 20th Anniversary a huge success:

  • From the Executive – Bruce Hillier & Ron Gardner for ensuring all things went off well!
  • From the Organizing Committee – Marv Hinton – ‘head honcho’
  • Pre-Walk 5km – Bruce & Marian Hillier
  • Pre-Walk 11km – Lorna & Bob Giles
  • Trail Marker Set-up 5km – Ron Conboy, Anne & Randy Pearse
  • Trail Marker Set-up 11km – Dave Rupar & Jane Estabrooks(maybe)
  • Trail Marker Takedown 5km – Ron & Chris Gardner & Angela & Bob
  • Trail Marker Takedown 11km – Ron Conboy
  • Registration Desk 0830-1000 – Lynda O’Dwyer
  • Registration Desk 0830-1000 – Chris Gardner
  • Registration Desk 1000-1200 – Barb Holm
  • Registration Desk 1000-1200 – Gwen McLaughlin
  • Pre-Registration Desk 0830-1030 – Bruce Hillier
  • Pre-Registration Desk 1030-Finish – Angela Stever
  • Checkpoint # 1 for 5 & 11km Route – Jane Hare
  • Checkpoint # 1 for 5 & 11km Route – Sally Hare
  • Checkpoint # 2 for 11km Route – Kirsten Andreassen
  • Checkpoint # 2 for 11km Route – Arthur Andreassen
  • BBQ Chief Cook & Bottle Washer – Bob Hubbard
  • Sponsor – New Balance/ Sports 4
  • Story Board of the Pictures - Linda O’Dwyer
  • Photographs – Graham Fawcett

Without you guys doing all this work, the walk would not have been a success, so thank you one and all.

Now for some good news, we were lucky enough to have three prizes for the day which were picked from the red tickets you received at registration. The lucky winners were:

  • New Balance backpack – Lorna Giles
  • New Balance backpack – Lorne Hemphill
  • Hydration Bag – Heather Briggs

These can be picked up from Gord Bell, phone(613) 825-7180

Pictures from the events have been posted on the CVF Web site:Here
